Ormiston Hospital Expansion

Ormiston Hospital, located in Flat Bush, south of Auckland's CBD, is the only private surgical hospital in the Counties Manukau region. Built in 2008, and located near Middlemore, Auckland's largest public hospital, it serves the community’s healthcare needs.

To meet the increasing demand for healthcare services, particularly for elective endoscopy procedures, Ormiston Hospital has undergone a significant expansion. This project nearly doubles the hospital’s size, with a 4,500-square-meter extension that includes an endoscopy suite with three procedure rooms, 15 additional patient beds, and 900 square meters of consulting rooms. The expansion also accommodates future growth.

The new facilities are seamlessly connected to the existing hospital building via a link bridge. The interiors are modern and functional, designed to provide a comfortable environment for both patients and staff. Natural colors and timber elements create a calm, welcoming atmosphere.

The project team worked closely with contractors from the early stages to address construction challenges, particularly around the façade and fire safety design. A façade mockup was created offsite to test material compatibility, and a sample hospital room was set up to ensure functionality and comfort. Detailed planning and communication ensured the connection between the existing hospital and the new extension was executed safely, even while the hospital remained operational. Onsite prefabrication of exterior timber frames also helped improve efficiency and keep the project on schedule.

Throughout the project, strong communication with neighboring sites and a focus on safety ensured smooth operations for hospital staff, patients, and the public. The expansion enables Ormiston Hospital to better serve the growing healthcare needs of its community with a modern, future-ready facility.
